Claggett Wilson document
Claggett Wilson’s sketchbooks are filled with colorful creations from all over the world. He was a portraitist (See Kemal article), a muralist (Matisse, upon seeing a mural-painted room designed by Claggett Wilson to exhibit an extensive art collection said, “It is perhaps the most ideal background for my paintings I have yet seen.”), a designer/decorator, as well as a costume and set designer. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art own a number of Claggett Wilson’s paintings.

Inspired by French art deco, this dinning room suite was commissioned by Lewisohn in 1925. The set was purchased in 1939 from the Parke-Bernet Galleries by William Henry Vanderbilt III, governor of Rhode Island, who subsequently gave it to his daughter as a wedding present. She later sold it to a dealer in San Francisco and in 1974 was purchased by it’s present owner.
